PSHCE at Beckfoot Upper Heaton

We provide a broad and balanced PSHE curriculum that is accessible to all pupils and covers all statutory requirements.

We aim to:

  • Broaden pupils’ horizons through a range of personal, social, health, economics, relationships and sex education and cultural opportunities.
  • To ensure that all pupils are able to thrive and develop as healthy individuals; where no child is left behind.
  • To ensure that all pupils understand how to stay safe. 
  • To develop a strength of character, and resilience that will help pupils to overcome the challenges they may encounter in adult life.
  • To provide an appropriate range of opportunities and experiences to allow pupils to succeed in the next stage of their education, training or employment.

Year 7

PSHCE at Beckfoot Upper Heaton: students will be introduced to the key PSHCE topics that will form the basis of PSHCE at BUH, based on school priorities.

Because I’m worth it: students will understand the significance of self-worth and how self-worth can be improved. They will explore romance and friendships (including online) and relationship boundaries.

Desert island living: students explore governance and finance including how countries are governed, laws are created and the nature of financial decisions.

My body my rulesstudents will explore healthy routines and influences on health. This will provide an opportunity to build on prior learning around puberty and personal hygiene, including unwanted contact and FGM.

Careers: Students will reflect on their own interests and hobbies and explore associated careers, they will then set goals that will support them on career journey.

We all come from somewhere: Living in Bradford, students are subject diversity in a variety of forms particularly linked to culture as a result of migration. They will reflect on significant stories around them, link to prejudice and bullying and understand what we can do to prevent this and celebrate diversity.

Year 8

PSHCE at BUH: students will be introduced to the key PSHCE topics that will form the basis of PSHCE at BUH, based on school priorities.

Can I trust the internet: This e-safety unit is based on the BeetFreekz ‘be internet citizens’ unit of work, exploring online safety, digital literacy, media reliability and gambling hooks.

Respect: Students will explore discrimination including gender stereotypes, racism, gender identity, sexual orientation and consent.

Legal or illegal: Students will learn about drugs and alcohol and their effects, how they can be misused and the pressures relating to drug use.

Careers: Students will explore various career paths based on pioneers in the field.

I’m fineThis unit gives students the opportunity to understand various attitudes to mental health and emotional wellbeing, including body image, and healthy and unhealthy coping strategies.

Year 9

PSHCE at BUH: students will be introduced to the key PSHCE topics that will form the basis of PSHCE at BUH, based on school priorities.

Healthy lifestyle: Students will explore how to live a healthy lifestyle focusing on diet, exercise, lifestyle balance and healthy choices.

Options and employability skills: Students will explore their employability skills and link them to career opportunities available to them, they will also prepare for GCSE choices as they explore the requirements for different roles

Under the influence: Students will explore peer influence and the effect of substance abuse and gangs. They will explore healthy and unhealthy friendships, assertiveness, substance abuse and gang exploitation.

Life in modern Britain: Students will explore what it means to be British and how migration and multiculturalism has influenced Britain today, and also the influence of the media.

Ur choice: This will explore healthy and respectful relationships with family and parents. They will explore the fundamentals of intimate relationships including the concepts of love and commitment, and teenage relationship abuse and contraception.

Year 10

PSHCE at BUH: students will be introduced to the key PSHCE topics that will form the basis of PSHCE at BUH, based on school priorities.

Am I under the influence? Students will explore the impact and influence of drugs, gangs, role models and the media. These will be studied with a range of lenses including religious, non religious and personal.

Mind over matter: students will be provided with strategies to identify mental health, reframe negative thinking and promote emotional wellbeing.

Careers: Students will explore careers in West Yorkshire to provide them with realistic opportunities available to them, they will also look at lifestyle affordability.

Ur choice: Students will explore relationships and sex expectations, sexual bullying, contraception, sexual health and pregnancy. They will explore divergent attitudes to relationships and families.

The left, extremists, fascists and me: This unit addresses extremism and radicalisation. Students will explore communities, belonging and challenging extremism

Year 11

PSHCE at Beckfoot Upper Heaton: students will be introduced to the key PSHCE topics that will form the basis of PSHCE at BUH, based on school priorities.

Planning for the future: Students will explore the options available to them after GCSEs including Apprenticeships, Sixth Form and college. They will also look at how they will be more independent.

Respect: Students will explore relationships through a range of lenses including religious, non religious and personal. These will include personal values, assertive communication, relationship challenges and abuse.

Social justice: Students will explore local, national and international events and understand the need for social justice and the impact this has on the lives of others. They will look at current issues and assess how they can make a difference

Exam preparation: Students will have the opportunity to develop their self efficacy and implement strategies to support effective mental health and revision in the run up to their examinations.
