Design Technology, Food and Textiles will encourage children’s creativity as they make an essential contribution to the creativity, culture and wealth of the nation.

Design Technology provides our students with access to modern tools and resources, promoting hands-on learning to prepare them for future careers. Students will develop their creativity and innovative thinking as they work both in teams and individually to develop, create and present their own ideas clearly and effectively.

Students will develop a multitude of skills including technical skills, creative thinking, communication skills, cultural literacy and entrepreneurship.

Enrichment

Bradford Manufacturing Week is an annual initiative that promotes careers in manufacturing to young people in West Yorkshire. Students will engage in tours, talks and work experience opportunities with local businesses.

The annual Big Bang competition also allows students to celebrate and support young people’s achievements in the STEM field. As students can enter their work with the hopes of reaching the national finals.

Assessment

Practical work is a key element of assessment in food, textiles and design technology, however written assessments are also used to assess students understanding of their theory.

We currently only offer KS4 study in Hospitality and Catering.

DT

Importance of design and how to utilise different design methods to create a product with 2D design.

Projects: Students will make a superhero torch and pop-up card

Food 

Students will combine theory and practical lessons to understand the essential knowledge and skills in food, including health and safety in the kitchen and healthy living.

Basic chopping, baking, mixing and decorating

Recipes covered: Dippy divers, cheese on toast, rock buns, pizza whirls and flapjacks

Textiles 

Students will review the work of artist Keith Haring and their work, as they are introduced to skills such as stenciling and block printing. Students will learn to sew a zip and evaluate their work.

Project: Designing and creating a pouch based on Keith Haring

Year 8

DT 

Students will recap the importance of a design brief and look at ACCESSFM as a design product, students will also receive an introduction to the concept of orthographic drawing.

Project: Students will make a moneybox

Food

Development of more complex skills like slicing and shaping. Introduction to heat transference before looking at the key elements of diet and allergies. What is required for a balanced diet?

Recipes covered: Pizza toast, quesadilla, plaited bread, Dutch apple cake and mac n cheese

Textiles

Research on Yayoi Kusama to create a design in their style. Students will learn core skills like tie-dye, applique and sewing skills.

Project: Students will make a cushion based on the style of Yayoi Kusama

Year 9

DT 

Students will carry out their own research of a topic and create an inspiration board to create their own final product. They will then evaluate their product.

Project: Students will make a mood light

Food 

Students will review the Eat Well Guide and break down the importance of each section. Students will understand the importance of nutrients and how to include them in their diet.

Students will refine their skills with more complex dishes, understanding health and safety elements of cooking meat and producing meals for dietary requirements.

Recipes: Rice salad, swiss roll, chicken fajitas, beef burgers, pasta arrabbiata, and spinach, potato and chickpea curry

Textiles 

Students will be given a brief and will conduct research around their chosen designs. They will be introduced to screen printing before learning how to create a drawstring channel, seams and adding eyelets
